In Malipsdrift, Limpopo, police have initiated a manhunt for people who are suspected of gang raping five women at funeral homes.
In the wee hours of Monday, September 5, 2022, the six armed suspects barged into two funeral homes close to Leporong along the R37 route.
According to accounts, six men approached two female companions as they were en route to meet a boyfriend who worked at Wisani Burial Society Funeral Parlour. The men grabbed them and took them to the first mortuary, where they shot and injured one employee.
According to Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, a police spokeswoman who confirmed the incident, the gang of thieves then targeted another morgue.
"When they arrived, there were six male and three female employees. The suspects allegedly beat all six boys brutally with the tips of their guns until they passed out, according to Mojapelo.
Then, all five of the females were gang-raped and had their smartphones and other personal stuff stolen. The suspects then removed an undisclosed sum of cash from the safe before fleeing, according to Mojapelo.
According to Mojapelo, another employee who was reporting for work found the victims, who were then reported to the police.
"When they arrived on the site, they saw some of the severely injured victims sitting on chairs and some laying on the ground. A few of the victims were women who had also been abused. Transported to a hospital for medical care were the victims.
Five counts of rape, three acts of kidnapping, an attempted homicide, and a business robbery have all been opened, according to Mojapelo.
A team of detectives has already been assembled by Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the provincial police commissioner in Limpopo, to find the culprits.
The squad will work through the night to find these horrible villains and bring them to justice. I implore members of the community to come forward with information to help the police quickly solve these crimes, added Hadebe.
